Our Story

Four decades of growing, planting, and putting down roots in the community we call home.

How it started

Rooted in Woodland

In 1981, Henry and Mary Tsugawa turned a lifelong love of plants into a business, opening a small retail nursery on the outskirts of Woodland, Washington. The focus from the beginning was on quality over quantity: a carefully chosen selection of ornamental trees, Japanese Maples in particular, grown and tended with patience.

Word spread among gardeners in Clark and Cowlitz counties. People drove from Portland, from Longview, from across the Columbia basin, because they knew what they would find here could not be replicated at a box store.

Today the nursery is led by the second generation, but the same values hold. Every plant on the lot has been chosen deliberately, cared for attentively, and sold with honest advice.

Beyond the nursery

Rooted in the Community

We have sponsored the Woodland Farmers Market, donated plants to local school gardens, and partnered with the city parks department on beautification projects throughout downtown Woodland.

Our annual Spring Open House has become a tradition for hundreds of families across the region, and our workshops have helped thousands of people become more confident, capable gardeners.

This is not just a business. It is a place people come back to year after year, season after season. That continuity is what we are most proud of.
